Dr. Lewis was born and raised in Lubbock and graduated from Texas Tech University. He then worked for many years as a paramedic and SWAT operator for the STAR Team and Lubbock EMS before attending medical school. After graduating from St. Matthew's University School of Medicine in 2007, Dr. Lewis returned to Lubbock and completed one year of general surgery training at TTUHSC. His passion for emergency medicine then led him to Jackson, MS to complete emergency medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where in addition to his residency, Dr. Lewis served as a Hinds County Sheriff’s deputy as a fully operational tactical physician and SWAT operator on the Jackson-Hinds SWAT Team. After completing residency, Dr. Lewis worked as an attending physician for Georgia Regents University Department of Emergency Medicine and as Associate Director of Tactical and Military Medicine for the Center of Operational Medicine, providing graduate medical education to emergency medicine residents and direct support and training to various local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The dream of practicing medicine in his hometown of Lubbock was finally realized in 2012 when Ryan and his family moved back to Texas. He then worked as an emergency medicine physician in the Covenant Medical System for four years, serving the citizens of Lubbock and the surrounding communities and region. During this time, Ryan has remained active in tactical medicine, law enforcement medicine, and public safety training. Dr. Lewis also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Tactical EMS Council and has helped author several best practice documents in tactical medicine, active shooter response, and various public safety topics.

After working for years in inner-city emergency departments as well as a busy hospital-based emergency department in Lubbock, the desire to improve the quality of care and access to emergency medical care for the citizens of Lubbock led him and his partners to create STAR ER. Ryan is proud to be a co-founder of Star ER, Lubbock’s largest Free-standing ER (at just over 8,500sf) and more importantly, the first and only ER (hospital and FEC alike) in Lubbock to be staffed exclusively by physicians who are residency trained and board certified in emergency medicine. Ryan has a special interest in all areas of emergency medicine, out-of-hospital medicine, disaster preparation/response, law enforcement medicine, active shooter/assailant preparation and response, and various other topics in public safety. In addition to serving as the CEO of STAR ER, Dr. Lewis served on the City of Lubbock Board of Health and continues to serve as a tactical physician in various capacities, providing support, training, and consultation for public safety organizations and select military units around the country.

Ryan enjoys skiing, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general. After living in the Cayman Islands, it is only natural that he is a certified as an advanced open water, deep water, and nitrox diver. He is married to a wonderful and supporting wife and has three great children.
