The new Baylor Emergency Medical Center at Murphy opens next week as the first center of its kind from Baylor in Collin County, an emergency hospital open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and staffed with emergency medicine physician specialists and experienced nursing and clinical staff.

The hospital is unlike urgent care centers—which are designed to handle non-life-threatening medical complaints—or free-standing emergency departments, officials said. The Murphy center will be a licensed hospital, providing clinical quality, and efficient operations. The facility is designed to provide an efficient, patient-centered experience.

“When you or a loved one is sick, whether it is an emergency medical need or when a hospital stay is necessary, we know how important it is to have quality care available and accessible in your neighborhood,” said John Wood, regional CEO and CNO for Baylor Emergency Medical Centers. “We are committed to providing the kind of care we would want for our own families.”

The facility will have an emergency department with seven beds, diagnostic imaging including X-ray, a CT scanner and ultrasound, a laboratory and an eight-bed inpatient unit for those requiring an admission for additional medical services. It will offer emergency medical and inpatient care that is “patient-centric” in its innovative approach, officials said.

“A great patient benefit is that an ER-trained physician is on-site, 24/7,” said Wood. “The smaller setting allows for attentive care for those patients who require overnight medical care.”

Baylor Emergency Medical Center at Murphy opens to the public Feb. 3. It is the first location in Collin County, and is part of a group of six hospitals opening in 2014 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The first Baylor Emergency Medical Center location opened July 1 in Aubrey. The other locations include: Burleson, South Arlington, Rockwall, Keller, and Colleyville.
